Steinberg Meets the Eameses

Renowned for his diverse drawings, murals, books, and sculptures, as well as his numerous contributions to The New Yorker, Saul Steinberg is celebrated as one of the 20th century’s most iconic artists. This publication, created in conjunction with the online exhibition of the same name, delves into the intriguing connections between Steinberg and designers Charles and Ray Eames. It focuses on the burst of creativity that erupted from their storied encounter in the summer of 1950, when Steinberg was given free rein to draw on the walls of the Eameses’ office and even the furniture itself.

The catalog showcases a selection of artifacts from the Eames Institute’s collection, including two fiberglass armchairs adorned with Steinberg’s whimsical drawings and a playful fake diploma he crafted for Charles, humorously acknowledging his unfinished architecture degree. Compelling archival photographs further illuminate their collaborative spirit and showcase Steinberg’s artwork.

Additionally, the catalog features an essay by noted Steinberg scholar Francesca Pellicciari, a special insert detailing Steinberg’s 1949 mural of Detroit, and a curatorial note from Llisa Demetrios, chief curator of the Eames Institute and granddaughter of Charles and Ray.
