Yinka Shonibare CBE Tote Bag
A bold and playful cotton canvas tote bag created exclusively for Tate in collaboration with Yinka Shonibare CBE.
The artist’s name is printed in gold on each item in the range, mirroring his 2014 work The British Library, an installation of 6,328 hardback books individually covered in colourful ‘Dutch wax print’ fabric. On a selection of books, the names of first and second-generation immigrants, both celebrated and lesser-known, are printed on the spines in gold leaf.
Yinka Shonibare CBE (b.1962) is a British-Nigerian artist working across the mediums of sculpture, painting, photography and film. In 2004, he was nominated for the Turner Prize and his first public art commission, Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle was displayed on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London in 2010. His work has charted new territory in the exploration of race, post-colonialism and cultural identity, often incorporating his signature Dutch wax fabric.
