Light & Noir: Exiles and Emigrés in Hollywood, 1933-1950

SKU: 1002029

Light & Noir: Exiles and Émigrés in Hollywood, 1933–1950 are stories of the German-speaking actors, directors, writers, and composers—many of them Jewish—who fled Nazi persecution in Europe and went on to shape Hollywood’s “Golden Age”

The émigré experience left an indelible mark through films of directors such as Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder, and Fred Zinnemann; composers Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Franz Waxman, and writers Salka Viertel and Lion Feuchtwanger. Genres, including anti-Nazi, noir, and comedy produced classics like Ninotchka(1939), Sunset Boulevard(1950), and Casablanca(1942).

This is the catalogue for the exhibition Light & Noir: Exiles and Emigrés in Hollywood, 1933-1950 co-presented with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, on view at the Skirball in 2015.
