Noam Chomsky is a cognitive scientist, political activist, critic, advocate of human rights, political activist, and public intellectual.
Besides making a handsome finger puppet, in the course of nearly 60 years at MIT he has revolutionized linguistics; his work in "transformational generative grammar" holds that certain grammatical structures are innate and universal. Chomsky has influenced such fields as artificial intelligence, computer science, psychology, and analytic philosophy. As an activist, he was an early critic of the Vietnam War and remains relentlessly critical of media and U.S. foreign policy. Chomsky is a prolific author; he has written more than one hundred books.
In 2013, the bee species Megachile chomskyi was named in his honor.
One more thing: Chomsky has literally dozens of honorary degrees at places where he has never taken a final exam. Somebody should look into this – maybe write an exposé or something.
