Tomato Pincushion with Strawberry Emery

Harking back to old traditions, placing a tomato on the mantel of a new home ensured prosperity by warding off evil spirits. When tomatoes were out of season, people weren't totally out of luck: They simply improvised with red material, sawdust, and a little bit of ingenuity.

These classic pin cushions are great for keeping track of sharp sewing supplies.  The small strawberry is made of sterner stuff to sharpen pins and needles that have gotten dull from use.
