Tallitot and Kippot

The tallit is the Jewish prayer shawl traditionally worn by men, and in recent years by women as well. The fringes (tzitzit) are the most important element of the tallit. They are knotted to represent the number of divine commandments and are fastened to the four corners of the garment.

As an expression of religious humility during prayer in the synagogue, many Jewish men (and some women) wear a skullcap (called a kippah in Hebrew or yarmulke in Yiddish).
