"Join, or Die" Metal Keychain
DesignMasters
Make your keyring hardcore with this fun "Join, or Die" keychain. "Join, or Die" is a political cartoon by Benjamin Franklin in favor of his Albany Plan, a call for colonial unity inspired by the Iroquois League of Six Nations.
At the onset of the French and Indian War (a.k.a. the Seven Years' War) between trade rivals Britain and France, Franklin introduced the Albany Plan, suggesting that representatives from each colony come together under a British Crown-appointed president-general to make laws, collect taxes, and form militia in defense of the British colonies against France. The eight sections of the snake represent the colonies-North and South Carolina at the tail-end; Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York along the body; and the New England colonies at the head. The snake imagery comes from an old folk superstition that snakes would come back to life after being cut in half.
