Israel Through American Eyes
A Century of Photography
by Barbara C. Gilbert
Relations between America and the Land of Israel go back more than two centuries. We are fortunate to have a photographic record of these connections for the past hundred years. It is a record providing insights into the fate of the Holy Land and, not incidentally, its significance for all of the spiritual outlooks which trace back to the Patriarch Abraham in biblical antiquity.
Israel Through American Eyes is the first large-scale photographic exhibition the Skirball Cultural Center has presented. We offer it proudly in salute to the State of Israel's fiftieth anniversary. We trust that these images, this pictorial precis of what American eyes have seen in the Holy Land, will be received by the public in its own right a worthy contribution to the unfolding history of America-Land of Israel relations.
