Benjamin Franklin
Born in Boston in 1706, Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) first worked as a printer in Philadelphia. His publishing and inventions made him a well-known figure throughout the American provinces and England. He became a delegate to the Continental Congress and was instrumental in drafting the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. In the course of his long diplomatic career, Franklin helped negotiate a peace treaty that officially ended the Revolutionary War. As the eldest delegate at the 1787 Constitutional Convention, in Philadelphia, he acted on several occasions to restore harmony. Franklin remained a beloved American celebrity even after his death in 1790.
