Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) characterized American democracy as "the last, best hope of earth." For American Jews of his day, Lincoln himself was revered in much the same light. Not only did he emancipate the slaves and preserve the Union; he steadfastly defended the rights of its Jewish citizens in an age when anti-Semitism was commonplace. The very name Abraham, recalling the Hebrew patriarch, spoke to Jews of Lincoln's moral stature and his affinity with their fate.
